Racial Discrimination: Allegations and Industry Response

American Airlines has recently faced multiple lawsuits alleging racial discrimination. In May 2024, eight Black male passengers were removed from a Phoenix-to-New York flight after a complaint about body odor. The passengers, who were the only ones asked to deboard, filed a federal lawsuit claiming racial bias. American Airlines acknowledged the incident was unacceptable and pledged to implement new anti-discrimination measures.

Separately, Barbara Morgan, a California mother, alleges she was sexually assaulted during a red-eye flight from San Francisco to Dallas by a known serial predator. Morgan claims the airline ignored prior misconduct reports and dismissed her complaints, raising serious concerns about the airline’s handling of passenger safety and harassment claims.

Personal Injury: Negligence and In-Flight Incidents

American Airlines is also facing lawsuits related to personal injury on its flights. In October 2023, George Latorre filed suit after suffering second-degree burns from hot coffee spilled on him during a flight. The suit alleges negligence in serving coffee at unsafe temperatures and inadequate employee training, seeking damages under the Montreal Convention.

Similarly, Gina Mason sued after being burned by a coffee pot that toppled during turbulence on a Baltimore-to-Detroit flight. She claims the flight attendant left the trolley unattended, resulting in first- and second-degree burns, and is pursuing compensation for her physical and emotional injuries.

Wrongful Death: Allegations of Medical Negligence

In April 2025, the family of John William Cannon filed a wrongful death lawsuit against American Airlines’ regional carrier, Envoy Air. Cannon suffered a medical emergency during a flight but was allowed to board his connecting flight without proper medical assessment.

The crew delayed emergency notification after he became unresponsive mid-flight, and he was pronounced dead shortly after landing. The lawsuit accuses the airline of negligence in medical care and emergency response, highlighting critical gaps in onboard health protocols.

Conclusion: Litigation Taking Flight

The spate of lawsuits against American Airlines spans critical issues from discrimination and personal injury to wrongful death. These cases challenge the airline’s safety, operational protocols, and corporate accountability. How American Airlines navigates these legal challenges will have profound impacts on its public image, regulatory scrutiny, and financial standing in the competitive aviation market.
