This Ghanaian case follows a broader trend. In Kenya, a similar 2023 lawsuit accused Meta of enabling mass psychological harm among Nairobi-based moderators. That case led to a court ruling affirming that foreign tech companies can be tried locally, even when services are contracted out to third-party vendors.
In 2025, content moderators across platforms — from TikTok to YouTube — announced the formation of a Global Trade Union Alliance for Content Moderators, seeking to secure basic workplace protections globally.
Looking Ahead: October and Beyond
As of July 2025, the Ghanaian legal team is finalizing filings, with court proceedings expected to begin later this year. Should the case succeed, it would force Meta — and potentially other platforms — to re-evaluate their global outsourcing practices, especially in low-income countries where legal protections are still evolving.
